Mourinho backs Vinicius Junior as Real Madrid face attacking selection dilemma

Jose Mourinho says Real Madrid still need Vinicius Junior despite the strong form of summer signing Yan Diomande, with the pair competing for a place in the team’s attack.

Vinicius Junior remains suspended for Real Madrid’s next two matches, although he could be cleared to return against Celta Vigo on 21 November. Whether Mourinho selects him for that game remains uncertain.

Diomande has impressed in the position in recent matches. The Ivorian has also offered Real Madrid greater defensive strength than his Brazilian team-mate, adding to the debate among supporters over who should start.

Mourinho was asked on Saturday, before Real Madrid’s victory against Santander, whether his side looked more balanced without Vinicius Junior in the starting XI.

“No, I see a team that works hard to be balanced in every situation,” Mourinho said.

“Offensively, defensively, with the ball, without the ball... I always see that. Vini is a great player and we need him.

“But when I say that we need him, it does not necessarily mean that he will start every match. I do not see him as a problem either.”
