Atletico Madrid lead Liverpool at Anfield after 18 minutes, with Marcos Llorente once again proving decisive at the stadium as the Spanish side make a strong start to their UEFA Champions League campaign.
The midfielder opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finishing a rapid counter-attack to give Atletico the advantage in a match that had initially appeared evenly balanced.
Liverpool and Atletico Madrid had both looked eager to impose their style during the opening stages. Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola and Dominik Szoboszlai tested the visitors’ defensive organisation as Liverpool sought a way through.
At the other end, Julian Alvarez and Alex Baena tried to create openings for Atletico Madrid, but neither side had been able to make the difference before Llorente’s intervention.
The breakthrough began with Alvarez, who carried the ball forward on the counter-attack before finding Llorente. The midfielder controlled the pass with his right foot and immediately followed up with a left-footed shot that beat Alisson.
The goal gave Atletico Madrid the lead and appeared to increase their confidence as the game developed. Liverpool, who had been attempting to control the tempo, were suddenly facing a more assured visiting side.
For Llorente, the goal continued a remarkable personal record at Anfield. It was his ninth goal in the UEFA Champions League and his fifth scored at Liverpool’s home ground.
That record has made Anfield a particularly productive venue for the Atletico Madrid player. Once again, he found the decisive moment in front of the Liverpool supporters, combining composure in possession with a quick finish after Alvarez’s counter-attack.
The early exchanges had suggested that both teams were capable of causing problems. Liverpool looked to Isak, Barcola and Szoboszlai to unsettle the Atletico Madrid defence, while Alvarez and Baena carried the threat for the visitors.
Neither team had been able to establish clear control, however, until Llorente converted Atletico Madrid’s first major opening. His finish changed the balance of the contest and put Liverpool under pressure at Anfield.
