Liverpool will wait until at least January before deciding whether to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo permanently, with the club retaining the option to complete the transfer for €55m.
Araujo joined Liverpool on loan from the defending LaLiga champions for the 2026/27 campaign after manager Andoni Iraola identified the need for a versatile defender who could provide cover across the backline.
The move followed the summer departure of Ibrahima Konate and continuing injury concerns involving Conor Bradley. Liverpool were also managing fitness problems affecting Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni, while both players’ lack of experience was considered another factor in the decision to bring in Araujo.
There had initially been concerns about how quickly the Uruguay international would adapt, but he has played in all five of Liverpool’s matches so far this season.
Araujo has started the past three games at right-back, underlining the defensive flexibility Liverpool wanted when they agreed the loan with Barcelona.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the deal contains a non-mandatory €55m purchase clause. He also said a permanent transfer would be straightforward if Liverpool decide they are willing to pay that amount.
Liverpool have complete flexibility over the timing of their decision until next summer. However, no determination on a full transfer is expected before at least January, with the club set to assess Araujo’s contribution before deciding whether to activate the clause.
The final decision on retaining the defender permanently will be made at the start of 2027.
