Sporting Lagos earn first NPFL win as Buter hails derby response

Sporting Lagos head coach Jeffery Buter praised his players after they secured their first win of the 2026/27 NPFL season with a 3-0 victory over Inter Lagos.

The newcomers produced a commanding display in the Matchday 3 derby at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, on Sunday.

Sodiq Ayoade, Aliyu Baba and Valentine Ogwu scored as Sporting Lagos claimed all three points in emphatic fashion.

The result marked an impressive recovery from their opening-day defeat by Doma United and ended a difficult run against Inter Lagos, whom Sporting had not beaten since the club’s inception.

Buter said the significance of the fixture, combined with the disappointment of their first league match, had demanded a strong reaction from his side.

“I feel ecstatic. Credit to the players; they put in a lot of work coming into the game,” Buter told the club’s media.

“We knew we hadn’t beaten them since inception, so it wasn’t just another game for us. After losing the first game of the season, we had to bounce back.

“What a way to respond. Kudos to the team.”

Sporting Lagos’ victory was their first of the campaign after the defeat by Doma United on the opening day.

They will attempt to maintain that momentum when they host struggling Abia Warriors in their next league fixture this weekend.
