Zinedine Zidane has paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo, describing the 41-year-old Portugal forward’s achievements as “exceptional” after their successful spell together at Real Madrid.
Ronaldo has been at the centre of attention in recent days after leaving Portugal’s training camp while unhappy with his departure. Zidane did not comment on that incident, instead choosing to focus on the Portuguese player’s career and contribution to the game.
“What he has achieved is exceptional,” the France manager said at a news conference.
Zidane worked with Ronaldo at Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018, a period that produced one of the most successful spells in the club’s history.
With Zidane in charge, Real Madrid won the Champions League three consecutive times, lifting the trophy in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Ronaldo was a central figure in that run of success.
“You have to pay tribute to his incredible career,” Zidane said. “I was lucky to have him alongside me because he helped me win exceptional titles.
“Hats off to Cristiano! I have always had a great deal of respect for all players, but even more so for those with whom I have shared the stage.
“And especially for Cristiano, who enabled us to win so many titles.”
