AC Milan are considering whether to bring Zachary Athekame back from Olympique Lyonnais during the winter transfer window after the right-back made an encouraging start to his loan spell, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The two clubs have already opened discussions about the possibility of ending the agreement early, although no deal has been reached.
Athekame joined Olympique Lyonnais on loan without an option to buy and has quickly become an important part of Paulo Fonseca’s side. The 21-year-old has made a strong impression in Ligue 1, scoring two goals and providing three assists in seven appearances.
His form has renewed AC Milan’s interest as the Italian club assesses its options on the right side of defence. Milan are understood to be looking to strengthen that position, where the players currently available are not all specialist right-backs.
Any move to bring Athekame back before the end of his loan would require the agreement of Olympique Lyonnais. The French club could also seek compensation for losing the player ahead of schedule, meaning the discussions may not necessarily lead to an agreement.
Athekame, who is of Nigerian origin, has previously spoken of his attachment to AC Milan and his desire to return to the club. The coming weeks are expected to provide greater clarity over whether that wish can be fulfilled.
The defender remains under contract with AC Milan until 30 June 2030 and has an estimated market value of 15 million euros.
Olympique Lyonnais’ interest in retaining him will be tested as Milan weigh up their defensive needs, while Athekame’s performances have strengthened his position in the discussions over his future.
AC Milan will soon face Bournemouth in their third match of the league phase of the Europa League. The published betting prices for that fixture are 2.00 for a Bournemouth win, 3.50 for a draw and 2.95 for an AC Milan victory.
