Yvan Dibango makes Champions League history despite LASK defeat

Yvan Dibango became only the third African player to provide at least three assists in a single Champions League match as LASK lost 6-3 to Liverpool in the second round of the league phase.

Liverpool took control early, with Bradley Barcola completing a hat-trick and Ronald Araujo, Jeremie Frimpong and Lewis Koumas also finding the net.

LASK’s defeat was their second loss of the European campaign, but Dibango played a part in all three of their goals. The 24-year-old left-back’s decisive contribution came during a 15-minute spell in the second half, when he supplied three assists.

According to data provided by Opta, Dibango’s performance places him in an exclusive group of African players to have registered at least three assists in one Champions League game.

He is also only the second Cameroonian to achieve the feat. Dibango joins former Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o, who recorded a similar performance against Levski Sofia in 2006, and Achraf Hakimi, who matched the record in 2018.

Although Dibango’s three assists could not prevent Liverpool from securing victory, they ensured his performance would have a place in Champions League history.

LASK will return to domestic action when they face Austria Lustenau in the ninth round of the Austrian championship.
