Warri Wolves have been fined N4 million, docked three points and ordered to play their next three home matches behind closed doors after an assistant referee was assaulted following their Nigeria Premier Football League match against Kano Pillars.
The incident occurred after Sunday’s matchday 10 fixture at the Southern Delta University Stadium in Ozoro. The NPFL said Warri Wolves breached its Framework & Rules by failing to provide adequate security, allowing unauthorised people into restricted areas.
According to the league’s official X account, the assault took place outside the stadium after the match. In its ruling, the NPFL said a Warri Wolves supporter attacked the appointed match officials, leaving the second assistant referee with a nose injury and bleeding.
Warri Wolves were fined N2 million for failing to provide adequate and effective security, with a further N2 million penalty imposed for the assault on the match official.
The club must also pay N250,000 in compensation to the affected assistant referee to cover treatment for the injury sustained during the incident.
In addition to the financial penalties, three points and three goals will be deducted from Warri Wolves’ accrued league total for assaulting and injuring the assistant referee.
The NPFL has also ordered the club to stage its next three home matches behind closed doors.
Warri Wolves have seven days to identify the person responsible for the assault and submit evidence that the individual has been prosecuted. The club has 48 hours from the date of notification to appeal against the sanctions.
The disciplinary action follows a match involving Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars at Southern Delta University Stadium, Ozoro.
