Warri Wolves have appealed against the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) sanctions imposed after match officials were attacked following Sunday’s goalless draw with Kano Pillars.

The Seasiders were fined ?4.2 million, had three points and three goals deducted, and were ordered to play their next five home league matches behind closed doors.

The club said it was seeking leniency, citing its efforts to identify and apprehend the suspect involved in the incident.

In a statement published on Warri Wolves’ official Facebook page, the club said it wanted to update its supporters and other stakeholders on the disciplinary action.

“Following the league’s decision, an appeal will be filed, requesting leniency in view of the efforts made by the club to apprehend the suspect, the available video evidence showing the club’s caution to the individual, and the subsequent arrest of the suspect,” the statement read.

Warri Wolves said it recognised the seriousness of the incident and respected the NPFL’s disciplinary procedures. However, the club expressed hope that the appeal would be given favourable consideration in light of the steps taken after the attack.

Points deduction could affect league position

The club also outlined the effect the punishment would have on its position in the league table if the points deduction is upheld.

Warri Wolves currently have 12 points and are 14th. The three-point penalty would reduce their total to nine points and see them drop to 17th place.

“The implications of the sanctions are significant. If the points deduction stands, Warri Wolves will drop from 12 points to 9 points and fall from 14th to 17th position on the league table,” the club said.

The Seasiders described the situation as a difficult period and called on their supporters to remain calm, united and committed while the appeal is considered.

“While the club acknowledges the seriousness of the incident and respects the league’s disciplinary process, we remain hopeful that our appeal will receive favourable consideration,” the statement added.

It also stressed the importance of protecting the club’s identity and legacy.

“Warri Wolves is bigger than any individual, administration, coach or player. It is a legacy we must all protect,” the statement said.

The club concluded by urging its supporters to continue backing the team while they await the outcome of the appeal.

“As we await the outcome of the appeal, let us continue to stand behind Warri Wolves The Seasiders.

“We hope for the best and trust that the appeal will receive fair and compassionate consideration.”
