Vozinha says he initially believed he was the subject of a prank when he learned he had been nominated for the Trophee Yashin, awarded to the best goalkeeper of the year.
The 40-year-old Cape Verde goalkeeper attracted widespread attention at last summer’s World Cup, where he played a key role in his country’s progress beyond the group stage.
Cape Verde also managed to frustrate Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia during the tournament, with Vozinha’s performances central to their success.
His displays earned him a move later that summer to Chilean top-flight club Colo-Colo. He has now also been included among the nominees for the Trophee Yashin, which was won last year by Gianluigi Donnarumma of Manchester City.
“Many people will say it is unfair, and to some extent I feel that myself. When I heard the news, I thought it was a joke,” Vozinha told France Football.
He said the nomination had taken him by surprise because of his respect for the goalkeepers competing at the biggest clubs and in the leading leagues.
“I say that because I have enormous respect for these exceptional goalkeepers who play for the best clubs and in the best championships,” he added.
Vozinha said he regarded the recognition as something that went beyond his own achievements and represented an honour for his country.
“I see this nomination above all as another reward for the whole of Cape Verde,” he said.
“At this stage of my career and my life, it is a true gift from heaven. So, thank you to everyone who nominated me.”
