Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany could be absent for several weeks after collapsing during a training session and being taken to hospital.
Kompany had been suffering from a virus in recent days and was coaching his team before feeling unwell during an FC Bayern reserve team training session. He will miss Bayern’s Bundesliga trip to Freiburg on Sunday while he continues his recovery.
Bayern director Max Eberl said Kompany’s condition was stable but warned that the 39-year-old may not return to the touchline for some time.
“The good news is that he is stable. Obviously, it was a difficult moment for all of us,” Eberl said.
“He collapsed on the pitch yesterday and is now in hospital, where he will remain for a few more days while they establish exactly what happened, carry out all the examinations, and check everything thoroughly.”
Eberl also stressed that Kompany’s health was more important than football.
“It just goes to show once again that football isn't the most important thing in life. The most important thing is your health. We're all sending Vini our best wishes for a speedy recovery.”
He later indicated that it could be “weeks” before Kompany is ready to resume his duties, a concern for Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich during a demanding period.
Bayern are due to face Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid over the coming month, alongside their Bundesliga commitments.
The Sun reported that Kompany had been experiencing pain in his legs, which was attributed to the virus, since last week. He also showed symptoms on Saturday, when Bayern defeated RB Leipzig.
Kompany has been in charge of Bayern Munich since May 2024. His record across 122 matches as manager stands at 91 wins, 19 draws and 12 defeats.
