Patrick Vieira says Senegal must improve their finishing after his first match in charge ended with a 1-1 draw against Mozambique in the opening round of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Lions made a strong start in Maputo and took the lead through Nicolas Jackson in the 32nd minute. However, Mozambique levelled in first-half stoppage time, with the equaliser arriving in the 45th minute plus two.
Vieira was disappointed that Senegal failed to make more of their opportunities before the break. Ernan played a significant part in keeping the hosts in the game, including denying Pape Matar Sarr a second Senegal goal in the 39th minute.
The visitors also lost momentum after half-time, allowing Mozambique to remain competitive and secure a point. Despite the result, Vieira identified aspects of the performance which pleased him, particularly the team’s overall approach.
The former Strasbourg coach wants to develop a side that reflects his own footballing principles, with an aggressive style and a clear intention to attack. He said the next priority would be to address the weaknesses exposed in Friday’s match.
Senegal will face Ethiopia on 29 September in their second Group J qualifier. They will then play Comoros in a friendly in Marseille on 4 October.
The draw leaves the Lions third in Group J, two points behind surprise leaders Sudan.
