Ademola Lookman earned strong praise from Diego Simeone after a busy and energetic performance in Atlético Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal FC in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
Although the Nigerian forward did not record a goal or assist, his overall contribution stood out, with Simeone highlighting his growing tactical importance to the team. The Atlético boss was particularly impressed with Lookman’s defensive work rate, describing it as a key part of his development within the squad.
Lookman played the full 90 minutes and was heavily involved throughout the game. He completed 95 percent of his passes in the opposition half and created one key pass, while also registering four shots, including two on target. Despite missing two notable scoring opportunities, he remained one of Atlético’s most active attacking outlets.
Beyond his attacking output, the Super Eagles forward also contributed significantly without the ball. He made five defensive actions, including two tackles, two interceptions, and one blocked shot. He also recorded two recoveries and won seven of his ten duels, helping Atlético disrupt Arsenal’s build-up play.
Simeone, speaking after the match, said:
“I loved Lookman’s game; we're getting an important player to understand that his defensive work helps us.”
The Argentine also praised Arsenal’s depth and quality, acknowledging the challenge posed by Mikel Arteta’s side, who remain unbeaten in the competition.
Despite still searching for his first goal contribution against Arsenal in six meetings, Lookman’s performance was seen as another step in his adaptation to Atlético’s demanding tactical system.
With the second leg set for the Emirates Stadium, the tie remains finely balanced as Atlético look to reach their first UEFA Champions League final in a decade.
