Sassuolo consider Francesco Acerbi return after Fedde Leysen injury

Sassuolo are considering signing another defender after Fedde Leysen suffered a serious injury, with former player Francesco Acerbi among the free-agent options being assessed, according to SportItalia.

Leysen joined Sassuolo from Union in the summer on loan, with an option for the Italian club to make the move permanent. The defender sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury during Sunday’s 1-1 Serie A draw with Milan and is expected to miss most of the season.

Although Sassuolo have other central defenders who could cover for Leysen, the club are examining the free-agent market for further defensive reinforcements.

One of the players under consideration is 38-year-old Acerbi, who has been without a club since his contract with Inter expired in June.

Acerbi previously represented Sassuolo between 2013 and 2018, making 173 appearances in all competitions. He has also played for Chievo, Milan, Lazio and Inter, and has made 423 appearances in Italy’s top division across those five clubs.
