Chelsea attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers said the 2-1 defeat by Arsenal was “only the beginning” after scoring the opening goal in the derby.
Rogers put Chelsea ahead after just two minutes, giving his side an ideal start against the team that had been the leading contender to sign him before his move to Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal recovered from the early setback when they equalised in the 25th minute. The Gunners then moved in front at the start of the second half and held on to their advantage to complete the comeback.
Speaking after the match, Rogers reflected on a result in which Chelsea had taken the lead but were unable to turn their positive opening into a victory. His goal was the first major moment of the game, arriving almost immediately and putting Arsenal under pressure from the outset.
However, the visitors responded before half-time and carried that momentum into the second half. Their winning goal came early after the interval, leaving Chelsea with the task of finding another equaliser. Arsenal kept their lead until the final whistle.
The defeat came against a club with which Rogers had been strongly linked before he joined Chelsea. Arsenal had led the race for the player for a long period, but Chelsea ultimately proved more persistent and secured his move from Aston Villa last summer.
That transfer history added an extra layer to Rogers' appearance in the derby. Having been pursued by Arsenal before choosing Chelsea, he scored against them within the opening two minutes, only for his new club to lose after conceding twice.
Rogers’ post-match message presented the result as an early stage rather than a defining setback. Despite Chelsea’s advantage at the beginning of the match, Arsenal’s response changed the contest and left the Blues without a reward for their fast start.
For Chelsea, the scoreline meant the early goal did not translate into victory. Rogers’ finish offered them control at the start, but Arsenal’s equaliser restored the balance before their second-half goal completed the turnaround.
The result also provided a clear account of how the match developed: Chelsea struck first, Arsenal levelled in the 25th minute, and the Gunners went ahead shortly after the restart. They then protected that lead to secure a 2-1 win.
Rogers, who joined Chelsea from Aston Villa last summer after Arsenal had spent much of the pursuit in front, was therefore left to discuss a personal highlight within a disappointing team result. His first goal of the derby was not enough to prevent defeat, but his assessment was that the loss should be viewed as part of what comes next.
Chelsea will now have to respond after allowing an early lead to slip away, while Rogers begins the next phase of his career at the club with a goal against the side that had previously been competing to sign him.
