Poland moved closer to qualifying for the next stage of the U20 tournament after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mexico in Group A.
The hosts came from behind to claim a crucial win on the second matchday, overcoming a Mexico side that controlled much of the contest and finished with 63% possession.
Mexico made the faster start and took the lead after only five minutes. Poland defender Bartczak turned the ball into her own net, putting the visitors ahead and giving Poland an early setback in front of their home supporters.
The response from Poland was immediate. Zwiazek restored parity just four minutes later, bringing the hosts level at 1-1 and ensuring the match remained finely balanced for the remainder of the first half.
Mexico continued to apply pressure after the interval and, in terms of possession and general control of the game, remained the stronger side. Poland were forced to defend against a series of attacks, but held firm as the match entered its decisive stages.
The winning moment arrived in the 76th minute when Poland were awarded a penalty. Witek took responsibility from the spot and converted calmly to put the hosts in front for the first time.
Mexico then pushed forward in search of another equaliser, but Poland’s defence stood up to the late pressure. The hosts protected their narrow advantage until the final whistle to complete a valuable victory.
Although Mexico had enjoyed a clear superiority in possession, Poland’s greater efficiency in the decisive moments proved the difference on the scoreboard. The hosts made the most of their opportunities, while Mexico were unable to turn their control of the ball into a second goal.
The result gives Poland a serious chance of progressing from Group A and represents an important win in front of their home crowd. Their ability to withstand Mexico’s pressure in the closing stages added to the significance of a success that was secured through resilience as well as clinical finishing.
Poland were ultimately rewarded for reacting quickly to the early own goal, finding an equaliser before Mexico could establish control of the scoreline and then converting the decisive penalty late in the match.
For Mexico, the defeat came despite their dominance in possession and a strong overall performance. They created sustained pressure against the Polish defence, particularly towards the end, but could not find the goal needed to take anything from the game.
