Patrick Zabi has yet to start a Ligue 1 match for Paris FC despite the club spending nearly €25m, including bonuses, to sign the 20-year-old midfielder from Stade de Reims.
The Cote d’Ivoire international has played only 42 minutes of competitive football after the opening five rounds of the French championship. His limited involvement contrasts with the expectations surrounding his arrival and the significant investment made in his transfer.
However, there is no sense of alarm in the player’s camp, according to L’Equipe. Zabi has continued to impress in training, where his commitment and technical ability have been noted. Those qualities have not yet been enough to earn him a place in manager Liam Rosenior’s preferred starting line-up.
Paris FC remain convinced by Zabi’s potential
Paris FC have not questioned their decision to recruit the young midfielder. Sporting director Marco Neppe had identified Zabi well before his move and played a key role in securing the transfer.
Neppe also persuaded the Arnault family, the club’s majority shareholder, to invest in a player regarded internally as a prospect for the future. The club’s approach is therefore based on long-term development rather than an immediate return on the transfer fee.
Zabi has been given time to adapt and improve without being placed under excessive pressure because of the cost of his move. He is regularly supported and reassured, with Neppe continuing to show confidence in the player.
Promising display against Nice
Although Rosenior has not rushed to hand Zabi a starting role, the Paris FC manager is aware of the qualities he can offer. Zabi provided an encouraging example during the club’s 3-0 victory over Nice on 30 August.
Used on one side of the attack, the two-time Cote d’Ivoire international repeatedly made forward runs and caused problems for his direct opponent. He also supplied the assist for Vincent Marchetti.
That appearance offered a reminder of why Paris FC were prepared to pay such a substantial fee for his services. Zabi was known as “Zabi la Magie” during his youth, and the club believe he possesses the ability to make a significant impact once he gains more experience at the highest level.
For now, he must compete for opportunities in a squad where places are not easily won. His lack of game time at the age of 20 does not necessarily threaten his progress, provided he takes advantage of the opportunities that come his way.
Paris FC remain convinced they have chosen the right profile. Zabi’s immediate task is to be patient and turn the promise he has shown in training into consistent performances in Ligue 1. His €25m transfer will inevitably sustain high expectations, but his progress will ultimately be judged by what he produces on the pitch.
Paris FC will face FC Lorient in their sixth Ligue 1 match.
