Super Eagles defender Ola Aina says his priority is to stay fit, perform well and enjoy playing football as he continues his career with Nottingham Forest and Nigeria.
The 29-year-old has adopted a positive approach after overcoming previous injury setbacks, insisting that being on the pitch and appreciating his career matter more to him than focusing on a particular position or dealing with pressure.
Aina has featured for both Nottingham Forest and the Super Eagles, and says he remains determined to work hard while keeping the game enjoyable. Speaking to Ratings, he explained that his main objective is to maintain his fitness, deliver strong performances and make the most of each opportunity.
“It’s been good. Everything is new, not perfect, but we’re still working on making these things better. Hopefully, in the games to come, it gets better.
“Hopefully we don’t fight for survival. Hopefully we’re safe and we’re doing well in the league. I just want to play good football, do good things, and hopefully we can have a good season.”
Aina’s comments come as Nottingham Forest continue to work towards establishing a successful campaign. While acknowledging that some aspects of the team’s situation are still developing, he said the squad must continue trying to improve and remain hopeful of avoiding a battle for survival.
The defender also spoke about Taiwo Awoniyi’s move from Nottingham Forest to Coventry City, a departure that has left Aina feeling like the only Nigerian player remaining at the club.
“Yeah, I’m alone now. I just want to keep playing and enjoying my football. That’s the main thing for me.
“I messaged him personally that day and it was a personal note I sent to him. I was so happy for him. It’s between us and I hope we can have a good season.”
Aina said he was pleased for Awoniyi after the transfer and revealed that he sent his former team-mate a personal message on the day the move was completed. Despite no longer having Awoniyi alongside him at Nottingham Forest, he said he hoped the striker could also enjoy a successful campaign.
For Aina, the focus remains on consistency and maintaining the appreciation that has guided him through his professional career. Rather than becoming distracted by individual expectations, he wants to remain available, contribute on the pitch and help Nottingham Forest produce a strong season.
