NFF Not Rushing Super Eagles’ Possible Move From Uyo to Lagos

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has played down the possibility of an immediate relocation of the Super Eagles’ home matches from Uyo to Lagos, saying the decision will depend on the readiness of the Teslim Balogun Stadium and other important considerations, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The position comes amid reports that Lagos is being considered as a possible venue for Nigeria’s next home fixture in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign following the Super Eagles’ 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

According to a senior NFF official who spoke anonymously, the federation is not prepared to make a sudden change of venue, with Uyo remaining the current home ground while discussions continue.

“Lagos is under consideration, but Uyo remains the venue for our games,” the official said.

The official added that the federation would consult the players before reaching a final decision on whether to move future home matches to Lagos.

One option being considered is to organise friendly matches at the renovated Teslim Balogun Stadium to assess the facilities and gauge the response of supporters before staging competitive international fixtures there.

The Super Eagles have played most of their home matches in Uyo for nearly a decade, and the NFF is understood to be weighing the possible effects of changing the team's familiar surroundings.

The official also disclosed that the Lagos stadium was not yet ready to host an international match. NFF inspectors are expected to assess the facility after the Lagos State Government completes the renovation work.

With the proposed November fixtures approaching, there are concerns that the federation may have limited time to complete the necessary inspections and secure the required approvals.

Meanwhile, the NFF and the Super Eagles’ technical crew, led by head coach Eric Chelle, have begun monitoring players who could be invited for the upcoming qualifiers.

The federation's preparations, including the players’ reporting date, will depend on CAF’s confirmation of the match schedule.

The official said the NFF plans to announce the squad five days after the dates are confirmed, allowing the technical crew to consider player availability before finalising its selection.

The proposed schedule has Nigeria hosting the first leg in Uyo on November 11, with the return fixture tentatively planned for November 15 in Zanzibar. However, both dates remain subject to official confirmation by CAF.
