Nadir Belhadj is being considered for a place on Algeria manager Brahim Hemdani’s coaching staff before the team’s international break in November.
Changes are expected within Hemdani’s backroom team ahead of the next Algeria squad, with the former Fennecs left-back understood to be in contention to become the manager’s second assistant.
Belhadj, who won 54 caps and scored four goals for Algeria, could work alongside Anthar Yahia. The former national team captain, who made 53 appearances and scored six times for the Fennecs, is already serving as Hemdani’s first assistant.
The possibility of Belhadj’s appointment was reported by journalist Khaled Mazouzi.
Belhadj ended his playing career at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season and moved into coaching in July 2023. He has since worked as a youth coach at Al-Sadd in Qatar.
Further changes are also expected among Algeria’s staff. Goalkeeping coach Nacereddine Berarma is under threat, while a performance analyst and video analysts could also be added to the set-up.
Algeria prepare for Togo double-header
Algeria will face Togo twice in November in the third and fourth rounds of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Fennecs will host the Eperviers in Tizi-Ouzou on 14 November before travelling to Lome three days later.
Their first camp under Hemdani produced mixed results. Algeria began with a 3-1 home victory against Zambia, but Ramy Bensebaini and his team-mates then had to settle for a 2-2 draw away to Burundi on 25 and 29 September.
They responded with a 2-1 friendly win over Niger on 6 October.
Algeria currently lead Group I, holding a one-point advantage over Zambia, their nearest challengers.
