Marseille defender Derek Cornelius is expected to be out for about three months after sustaining a hip injury while representing Canada on international duty.
The 28-year-old will not need surgery, according to L’Equipe, but is unlikely to play again in 2027.
Cornelius suffered the injury during a training session in Toronto on Wednesday. It was a non-contact lower-body problem and he was taken to hospital for assessment.
The Canada international returned to Marseille this summer after spending last season on loan at Rangers. He has made only limited appearances for the French club this season, playing 26 minutes in Ligue 1 and 67 minutes in the Europa League.
Cornelius started Marseille’s Europa League match against Besiktas and had appeared likely to provide a rotation option for Bruno Genesio’s squad.
His absence leaves Marseille without the defender for an extended period, although he will not require an operation as he begins his recovery.
