France Football has included Senegal forward Sadio Mane and Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi in the 30-player shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
They are the only two African representatives among the nominees, providing further recognition for two of the continent’s leading footballers, despite their careers now following different paths.
Hakimi has been selected after another outstanding campaign with Paris Saint-Germain. The Morocco international made a significant contribution through his attacking output, consistency and influence in important matches.
The full-back was involved in major successes for the Paris club, including their achievements in the Champions League, Ligue 1 and the Super Cup.
Across the season, Hakimi played 32 matches, scoring three goals and providing nine assists. Those figures underline his importance to the Paris Saint-Germain system and stand out particularly for a defender.
Hakimi was already sixth in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting and has strengthened his position among the leading full-backs in world football. His performances have also reinforced his status as captain of the Atlas Lions.
Reflecting on a historic achievement, Hakimi said: « Nous sommes devenus une famille ». He also discussed Luis Enrique and the 2026 World Cup.
Mane recognised again
Mane has also maintained his place among the game’s most respected African players. The Senegal forward, who now plays for Al Nassr, remains one of the most experienced and accomplished footballers of his generation.
His attacking efficiency, wealth of experience at the highest level and important role with the Senegal national team all contributed to his latest Ballon d’Or nomination.
Mane’s inclusion is particularly notable because he is now playing outside Europe. Alongside Hakimi, he will be one of only two African players on the 30-man list for the prestigious award.
The nomination adds another chapter to Mane’s international career with Senegal, as attention continues to focus on his record and contribution with the national side.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in London on 26 October.
