Mamadou Coulibaly: Three things to know about Monaco’s emerging midfield talent

Published on: 04 October 2026

At 22, Mamadou Coulibaly is beginning to establish himself as one of the young players to watch at AS Monaco. The Mali midfielder has come through the club’s academy and is attracting attention with his energy, aggression in challenges and ability to operate in several positions.

His recent displays have also prompted interest from a number of European clubs. Here are three key points about the Monaco player.

1. Developed through Monaco’s academy

Born in Paris in 2004, Coulibaly joined AS Monaco’s academy, La Diagonale, during the summer of 2019.

Before moving to the Principality, he played for several clubs in the Paris region, including Sevran, Villepinte and Epinay.

Coulibaly progressed through Monaco’s youth teams before signing his first professional contract in 2022. His development was rewarded with a first official appearance for the senior side at the beginning of 2024.

2. A combative and versatile midfielder

Coulibaly’s game extends beyond his defensive work. The 1.79m left-footer is known for his intensity, high work-rate and willingness to put opponents under pressure.

He has been used in central and defensive midfield roles, but can also move forward and operate in certain wide positions. That flexibility is one of his main strengths.

During AS Monaco’s European play-offs, Coulibaly made a particular impression after being named man of the match. He also contributed with goals and assists during that run.

3. European clubs are monitoring him

Coulibaly’s performances are now being noticed beyond Monaco. Atletico de Madrid, Naples, Newcastle and Brentford are among the clubs said to be following the midfielder’s progress closely.

AS Monaco, meanwhile, want to protect their investment and keep the player for the long term. Coulibaly is under contract until 2028, while the club are believed to value him at between 35 and 40 million euros.

Monaco are also working on a possible extension that would take his contract through to 2030. His current market value is estimated at 20 million euros by Transfermarkt.

AS Monaco’s next fixture is against Toulouse in the 6th round of the French championship.
