Riyad Mahrez is poised to continue his career in Qatar after agreeing a deal with Al Shamal, according to reports.
The 35-year-old former Algeria international has been without a club since leaving Al Ahli and is currently training in Dubai with a personal coach to maintain his fitness.
Mahrez had been close to joining Al Shabab, but that move did not materialise, as reported exclusively by Africafoot. He is now expected to relocate to Qatar after reaching an agreement with Al Shamal on Friday, according to Winwin.
Al Shamal finished as runners-up in the Qatar Stars League (QSL) last season. Mahrez will join fellow Algeria international Baghdad Bounedjah at the club.
The opportunity to compete in the Asian Champions League was an important factor in Mahrez’s decision. He has won the competition in each of the past two seasons.
The former Le Havre AC player is expected to sign a one-year contract with Al Shamal, with the option of extending the deal for a further season.
Mahrez is due to arrive at the start of the week for a medical before completing the move officially.
