Lookman Denied as Atlético, Arsenal Share Spoils in UCL Semi-Final First Leg

Ademola Lookman was unable to find the net as Atlético Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal FC in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash at the Wanda Metropolitano, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

With Atlético unbeaten in their last six UEFA Champions League knockout games against English opposition, Diego Simeone’s side started with intent, but it was the visitors who gradually imposed themselves on the contest.

David Raya was called into early action, producing a fine save to deny Julián Álvarez, before Arsenal responded through Martin Ødegaard and Noni Madueke, who both came close.

The breakthrough arrived just before halftime when Viktor Gyökeres converted from the penalty spot after being fouled by Dávid Hancko, handing Mikel Arteta’s side the advantage at the break.

Atlético responded strongly after the restart, with Lookman testing Raya from close range as the hosts increased the pressure. Their persistence paid off when a handball by Ben White resulted in a penalty, which Álvarez calmly converted to restore parity.

The Spanish side pushed for a winner, going closest through Antoine Griezmann, whose effort rattled the crossbar. However, missed chances from Lookman and resolute defending from Arsenal ensured the game ended level.

A late penalty initially awarded to Arsenal for a challenge on Eberechi Eze was overturned after a VAR review, allowing Atlético a reprieve in the closing stages.

The result leaves the tie finely poised ahead of the return leg in North London, with Arsenal extending their unbeaten run in the competition, while Atlético will take confidence from another competitive showing on the European stage.
