Lionel Messi has scored against seven different African nations during his international career, with Algeria standing out as the Argentina captain’s most frequent opponent.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has built a remarkable record for the Albiceleste against some of the strongest teams in world football. His goals against African opposition have come both in World Cup finals and in high-profile friendly matches.

Algeria lead the list, having conceded five goals to Messi. Nigeria are second, with three goals against the Argentina forward, including strikes scored during memorable group-stage meetings at the World Cup.

Messi’s record extends beyond those two nations. He has also found the net once against Egypt, Zambia, Cape Verde, Angola and Benin.

The figures underline the consistency and influence of the Rosario-born player whenever he has faced defences from the African continent. Across his international career, Algeria remain his most productive African opponent, while Nigeria are the only other nation against whom he has scored more than once.
