Kevin De Bruyne could prefer a move to Major League Soccer over other leagues outside Europe if his time at Napoli comes to an end.
The Belgian midfielder has been linked again with San Diego FC, who were previously reported to be interested in signing him before he joined Napoli from Manchester City.
Napoli are reportedly unlikely to trigger the one-year extension in De Bruyne’s contract. His current deal runs until June 2027, but if the additional year is not activated, the 35-year-old could become available.
De Bruyne has considerable interest in the prospect of playing in MLS. He had previously been keen on joining Chicago Fire, before opting to remain in Europe and continue his career with Napoli.
His future in Italy now appears uncertain, leaving him to consider which league would provide the most appealing next stage of his career. A move to Saudi Arabia has been discussed previously and could return as an option, but MLS is understood to be the destination he would be most willing to explore if the right opportunity becomes available.
San Diego FC are among the clubs who could provide that opportunity. The Californian side were strongly linked with De Bruyne before his move to Serie A and are now reportedly preparing for the possibility of making another proposal.
The chance to recruit a player with De Bruyne’s technical ability and experience would appeal to San Diego FC. The club made an impressive start as Major League Soccer’s newest franchise, although their performances have declined during 2026.
Greater control in midfield is one area in which the club could improve. De Bruyne would offer technical quality, leadership and extensive experience as San Diego FC seek to establish themselves among Major League Soccer’s leading teams.
The timing of a possible move could also be significant. Major League Soccer is preparing to launch its new Sprint Season in February 2027. The format will feature a shortened regular season, followed by the playoffs and MLS Cup in May, before the competition moves towards a summer-to-spring calendar.
For De Bruyne, joining San Diego FC would represent a high-profile move and a new challenge under a revised league structure. For the club, his arrival would be a major addition as they aim to strengthen their position in Major League Soccer.
Much will depend on how negotiations over his future at Napoli develop and whether San Diego FC, or another club, presents an opportunity that suits him.
Saudi Arabia remains a possible alternative, but if De Bruyne decides to continue his career outside Europe, MLS is understood to be the option that holds the greatest appeal.
