Michael Kayode marked his first appearance for Italy by scoring in a 4-1 victory over Turkey in Bursa.
The 22-year-old Brentford right-back made his international debut and found the net for the first time in an Italy shirt, playing a major role in the Nazionale’s win.
Born in Italy to parents from Ondo State in Nigeria, Kayode was eligible to represent the Super Eagles. The defender instead chose to continue his international career with Italy, a decision given added significance by a debut that ended with a goal.
Kayode was energetic throughout his time on the right flank and produced a well-rounded performance. He completed 39 of his 42 passes, had 69 touches and created one chance.
He also contributed in the final third, where he made three passes. His delivery was particularly effective, with every cross and long ball he attempted finding its target. Defensively, he made four clearances and won back possession twice.
The result allowed Italy to respond after their 2-0 defeat by Belgium in Rome last Friday. It was the team’s first match since their failure in the race for the World Cup, and the victory in Turkey offered a positive response.
Turkey allowed Italy enough space to control the game and build attacks, but the evening will be remembered most clearly by Kayode, whose first international appearance ended with an immediate contribution on the scoresheet.
