Harry Kane reached 100 Bundesliga goals in record time as Bayern Munich crushed Union Berlin 7-0, while Mohamed Salah and Raphinha also starred in a weekend of notable winners and losers.
The defending German champions handed Union their heaviest Bundesliga defeat, with Kane reaching the century in only his 98th league appearance. He then scored again and has now registered 152 goals in 154 matches since joining Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023.
Michael Olise also enjoyed a memorable evening, scoring his first competitive club hat-trick, providing an assist and receiving a perfect 10 rating from Flashscore for the second time in his last three matches.
Chelsea’s difficult start under Xabi Alonso continued with a 3-0 defeat by Brentford in the London derby. It was their first top-flight loss at Brentford since 1938, and, after winning their opening two Premier League matches, Chelsea have taken only one point from their last three.
Alonso became just the sixth manager in Premier League history whose side conceded at least twice in each of their first five matches under a new coach. The previous managers to suffer the same fate were Mick McCarthy, Sammy Lee, Terry Connor, Slavisa Jokanovic and Scott Parker.
Mamelodi Sundowns produced a surprise 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli in the revived Intercontinental Cup. The financial contrast between the teams was stark, with the visitors’ squad valued at about five times the South African club’s estimated 40m euros.
Sundowns progressed with two accurate headers from Nuno Santos and also claimed the official Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup trophy. They will next face the winner of the Derby of the Americas between Mexican side Toluca and an as-yet-unconfirmed South American representative.
Serbian club Radnik let a commanding position slip in a remarkable 4-4 home draw with Partizan Belgrade in the 10th round of the local league. Radnik led 3-1 at half-time and had a man advantage for about an hour after Milan Vukotic was sent off in the 35th minute, but conceded three times after the break.
Partizan had more shots, passes and possession in the second half, while Radnik also committed more fouls.
Brighton marked their 125th anniversary by beating Arsenal 3-0 in the fifth round of the Premier League, inflicting their first defeat of the season. The German midfielder Pascal Gross scored in the 31st minute and later set up Chema Andres for the third goal.
Since returning to England in the winter, Gross has recorded four goals and three assists in his last five matches. Brighton have lost only once in the Premier League this season and also eliminated Manchester United from the League Cup after coming from behind to win 3-2.
Tottenham Hotspur ended a 540-minute scoring drought in the new Premier League season but still lost at home to Aston Villa, leaving them bottom of the table. Their goalless run was their longest since 2006, when they went 467 minutes without scoring between August and October.
Conor Gallagher’s 86th-minute goal ended the drought, but could not prevent defeat. De Zerbi’s men have now failed to win any of their last 36 league matches in which they conceded first. They have also lost 50 of 141 Premier League matches at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the same number of home defeats Arsenal have suffered in 382 competitive games.
Mohamed Salah, who left the Premier League this summer, remains in outstanding form. He scored a hat-trick and supplied an assist as Trabzonspor beat Galatasaray 4-0 in the sixth round of the Turkish Super Lig.
The former Liverpool star scored in the fourth minute, created the second goal before half-time and completed his first Turkish top-flight hat-trick in the 80th minute. He now has seven league goals from six matches.
Raphinha celebrated extending his Barcelona contract until 2030 by leading LaLiga’s leaders to a 3-1 comeback win at Sevilla. He became Barcelona’s first player in 11 years to score a perfect LaLiga hat-trick, following his three-goal display against Racing Santander in a 7-2 victory.
He needed only four shots for Saturday’s three goals, which had a combined expected goals value of 0.83.
