Federico Gatti headed an equaliser in the second minute of stoppage time as Juventus rescued a 1-1 draw against AC Milan at the Allianz Stadium, extending their unbeaten run against the Rossoneri in Serie A to seven matches.
The result meant both sides remained unbeaten after winning their opening two games of the season, although Milan appeared set to claim their first league victory over Juventus since May 2023 until Gatti intervened.
Juventus started with the greater attacking threat. Kerim Alajbegovic, making his first start for the club at the age of 18, sent an effort over the crossbar inside the opening two minutes.
Nicolas Gonzalez was also included in the Bianconeri starting XI after scoring in their 2-0 victory over Parma eight days earlier. He tested Mike Maignan in the 12th minute, forcing the AC Milan goalkeeper to beat away a powerful strike.
The hosts came even closer to taking the lead midway through the first half. Francisco Conceicao cut inside from the right and made Maignan dive to his left to keep out the shot. Manuel Locatelli reached the rebound but could not make sufficient contact to turn it into the net.
Maignan continued to be the busier goalkeeper and made another important save seven minutes before half-time. Conceicao had found space behind the Milan defence before striking a half-volley, but the French goalkeeper parried it away.
At the other end, Guglielmo Vicario did not have to make a save before the interval, with Milan failing to produce a shot on target.
A third consecutive goalless draw between these teams looked possible after the break, but Juventus again threatened when Conceicao broke forward 10 minutes into the second half. His shot beat Vicario but struck the base of the post.
AC Milan manager Ruben Amorim responded by making three substitutions on the hour. Summer signing Diego Moreira was among those withdrawn after an underwhelming debut, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Samuel Chukwueze and Alphadjo Cisse were introduced.
Cisse had scored in Turin two weeks earlier, opening the scoring on his Serie A debut in Milan’s 2-1 win at Torino. The 19-year-old struck again in the 68th minute, controlling Chukwueze’s diagonal pass inside the penalty area before sending a low finish into the far corner.
His goal ended Milan’s six-match scoring drought against Juventus in Serie A. It also continued a notable pattern for the Rossoneri, with four of their five league goals this season now having come between the 61st and 75th minutes.
Luciano Spalletti sent on striker Nick Woltemade for his debut as Juventus pushed for a response. The forward had a chance six minutes from time when the ball broke loose in the box, but he turned and fired over the crossbar.
Milan seemed ready to hold on, only for substitute Gatti to change the outcome. The defender had been on the pitch for only four minutes when he rose to meet Teun Koopmeiners’ superb cross and headed past Maignan in the 92nd minute.
It was Gatti’s second successive goal beyond the 90-minute mark for Juventus, securing another late point for the Bianconeri.
