Issam Abdelhamid Naim has been identified as one of Algeria’s leading young prospects after captaining Algeria U21 to victory at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto. The 20-year-old central defender now faces the challenge of reproducing that authority for ES Setif, where his first sustained exposure to senior football was far less consistent.
Born in Tissemsilt on 21 December 2005, Naim ranks 12th in the #TalentsAlgeriens series, which profiles 25 young players to watch in the Algerian Ligue 1 during the 2026/27 season. The list considers not only natural ability, but also potential, expected importance to their clubs and the role the campaign could play in each player’s development.
Naim was a commanding presence for Algeria U21 in Taranto, leading the defence and forming a particularly solid partnership with Mahdid Daniel Ilyes. He showed confidence, organised those around him, won his duels and accepted the responsibilities that came with the captain’s armband.
His experience at ES Setif offered a more difficult test. Mistakes, strong reactions and periods of reduced confidence underlined the difference between impressing in youth football and coping with the immediate demands of the professional game.
More than a traditional centre-back
Sofiane Benkhelifa, who worked in the ES Setif environment last season and has previously been involved with USMA and Olympique Akbou, regards Naim as a defender who is particularly strong in one-on-one situations.
The young centre-back also possesses several qualities associated with the modern position. Imad Bella, a former footballer and ES Setif player who is now an agent, has highlighted the same qualities, while Abdelkader Bouchaala, a youth coach who has worked with CR Belouizdad, USMA and ES Setif, first encountered Naim during his time with the CR Belouizdad U17 side.
Bouchaala told Africafoot that Naim is comfortable taking the ball forward. His ability to pass out from the back, carry possession and play vertically gives him a profile that extends beyond simply stopping attacks. He has also shown he can operate in front of the defence when required.
Benkhelifa believes there is still room for physical improvement, but considers Naim’s main development area to be mental rather than technical.
Learning to respond to mistakes
Moving into senior football exposed Naim to the need to recover immediately after an error. Benkhelifa observed that the defender could appear apprehensive when stepping up to the senior level, despite showing considerably greater assurance with Algeria’s youth teams.
Bouchaala believes the surroundings at Setif did not always make that transition easier. External criticism can weigh heavily on a young defender, a point also made by Bella. The task for Naim is not to become unaffected by setbacks, but to prevent one mistake or a poor run from changing his entire performance.
His success with Algeria U21 provides evidence that he can lead when his confidence is intact. He did more than make the squad in Taranto: he directed a defence that finished the tournament as champions.
He also benefited from spending much of pre-season with the senior team and training alongside more experienced players, according to Bella. The qualities needed to compete at this level are already evident in his duels, distribution, ball-carrying and positional versatility.
The next step is consistency: ensuring the player who commanded Algeria U21 in Taranto can also emerge at ES Setif whenever the crowd scrutinises every challenge, pass and mistake.
