Lagos football fans are set for a long-awaited top-flight derby when Inter Lagos welcome Sporting Lagos to the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday, with both teams desperate to finally open their accounts in the new Nigeria Premier Football League season, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
The encounter will mark the first Lagos derby in the Nigerian top flight in a decade, adding extra significance to a fixture that already promises plenty of local bragging rights.
The meeting gained its historic status after Sporting Lagos’ Matchday Two fixture against Ikorodu City was postponed because the Mobolaji Johnson Arena was unavailable due to a political rally.
The last time two Lagos-based teams met in the top flight was in 2016, when MFM FC faced Ikorodu City in a derby that ended in a 3-1 victory for MFM.
Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos have also traded jabs on social media ahead of Sunday’s encounter, with Inter pointing to their unbeaten record against Sporting from four previous meetings across friendly and second-tier matches.
Sporting, however, have the greater recent experience of top-flight football, having played in the NPFL during the 2023/24 campaign before suffering relegation. They began that season with an unbeaten run across their opening three matches.
Both sides head into Sunday’s clash searching for a response after suffering defeats to early league leaders Doma United in their most recent outings.
Neither team has scored in the league so far this season, while Inter have played one more match than Sporting and currently occupy the bottom positions alongside their city rivals.
That makes Sunday’s meeting more than just a derby, as both teams have an opportunity to claim their first points, score their first goal and move away from the foot of the NPFL table.
