Ilyes Hamache has strengthened his case for an Algeria call-up in November after continuing his impressive start to the season with Cambuur.
The 23-year-old Franco-Algerian winger scored and provided an assist as Cambuur won 6-1 away to Willem II on Saturday. He opened his account by lifting a composed finish over the goalkeeper after being played through, then set up his side’s fourth goal.
That performance took Hamache’s Eredivisie record to five goals and two assists. He has scored in each of his past two appearances, having also found the net against AZ Alkmaar.
His form is likely to have caught the attention of Brahim Hemdani, with the next Algeria gathering only a few weeks away. Hamache’s seven goal contributions in 10 matches offer a strong argument for consideration.
The winger’s current run has revived a career that had begun to lose momentum. He first made his name at Valenciennes before moving to Schalke 04, where he was unable to establish himself. A loan spell at Amiens brought regular playing time, although he did not produce the same level of attacking output he is now showing at Cambuur.
A right-footed player who operates mainly from the left, Hamache frequently cuts inside to shoot or combine with team-mates. His pace, changes of speed and ability to run in behind also allow him to play on the right or behind a central striker.
Hamache believes he can contribute defensively as well, giving him an additional point of versatility. That could appeal to Hemdani, although competition for attacking places remains strong.
Mohamed Amoura is regarded as the leading option on the left, while Adil Boulbina enhanced his position during the most recent international break. Ilan Kebbal is another attacking player capable of filling several roles.
Hamache is therefore not guaranteed a place in the squad, and his current form does not automatically mean he will immediately alter the established order. However, his performances have made him a serious candidate as Hemdani continues to build his Algeria side and assess further attacking options.
His interest in representing Algeria is longstanding. While playing for Valenciennes, Hamache was approached by Algeria’s Under-19 side but chose to wait in the hope of joining the senior team directly. He later played in a friendly for France Under-20 in November 2022, an appearance that did not prevent him from remaining eligible for the Fennecs.
Hamache has recently restated his ambition to play for Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup. There has been no indication so far of whether he has received a preliminary call-up.
For now, though, his performances at club level are making the clearest case.
