Atletico de Madrid are preparing to send midfielder Obed Vargas to Getafe on a season-long loan before the LaLiga transfer window closes on 1 September.
The agreement has been reached between the two clubs, with Vargas expected to move across Madrid after Getafe secured qualification for the UEFA Conference League. The deal will include a purchase clause, but Getafe have insisted that it is non-binding, meaning the Mexico international could return to Atletico de Madrid at the end of the campaign.
Vargas had attracted interest from several LaLiga clubs, but he appears to have chosen Getafe as the next stage of his development. The move would give him the opportunity to play more regularly after his route into Atletico de Madrid’s starting XI became increasingly difficult during the summer.
The midfielder made an impression in flashes during his breakthrough 2025/26 season in Madrid. Atletico de Madrid manager Diego Simeone also used him regularly during pre-season as he assessed his squad for the new campaign.
However, the arrival of Morten Hjulmand and Lee Kang-in has strengthened the competition for midfield places. Club captain Koke has also agreed a contract extension at the Estadio Metropolitano, further reducing the space available to Vargas in Simeone’s preferred line-up.
As a result, Atletico de Madrid have opted to allow the 2025/26 breakthrough player to leave temporarily rather than retain him in a limited role. The season-long arrangement leaves open the possibility of Vargas returning to the club, while the non-binding nature of the purchase clause means Getafe will not be obliged to sign him permanently.
Vargas could make his Getafe debut as soon as next week. Jose Bordalas’ side are due to host Celta Vigo on 7 September, providing a potential first appearance for the midfielder in his new surroundings.
The transfer is set to be completed before the 1 September deadline, with Atletico de Madrid choosing a loan move that keeps control of Vargas’ future while allowing him to pursue regular football at Getafe.
