Federico Chiesa’s limited involvement at Liverpool has raised serious doubts about his future, with a move away from Anfield in January now increasingly possible.
The Italy international was left out of the substitutes’ bench for Sunday’s match against Arsenal, underlining how far he has fallen down the pecking order since arriving at Liverpool in 2024.
Chiesa has made only one appearance this season, playing just two minutes in Liverpool’s 3-0 home defeat by Manchester City. That lack of regular football has left him with little opportunity to build the momentum required to push his way into manager Arne Slot’s plans.
His situation is particularly striking because he is fit and available again after overcoming injury problems at the beginning of the season. However, returning to full fitness has not led to a significant increase in playing time.
Liverpool have instead continued to offer opportunities to their big-money signings, while also giving chances to younger players. As a result, Chiesa is now further down the hierarchy than he had expected.
The lack of involvement is becoming increasingly difficult for the former Juventus winger, who joined Liverpool hoping to revive his career after leaving Serie A.
With the January transfer window approaching, an exit is emerging as a realistic possibility if his circumstances do not change. A return to Italy could offer a solution for both Chiesa and Liverpool, particularly if he remains outside the first-team picture.
Lazio, Inter and Roma are among the clubs who could consider taking Chiesa back to Serie A. Any potential transfer would depend on the type of agreement Liverpool are prepared to accept.
Chiesa retains the technical quality and experience to make an impact at a high level, but his current lack of opportunities is doing little to strengthen his position at Liverpool.
