Fabregas says Como ‘fortunate’ after controversial Venezia victory

Cesc Fabregas conceded that Como were fortunate to beat Venezia 1-0 on Sunday (November 1), with Lucas Da Cunha’s penalty sending his side into the Serie A top four.

The visitors also appeared to concede a penalty after an incident involving Luis Milla. However, the decision was overturned following a VAR review, sparing Como from conceding an equaliser.

Fabregas said he initially believed the ball had struck Milla’s arm illegally.

“When I saw it, it looked like a clear penalty to me,” he told TuttoMercatoWeb.

The Como manager said he had asked about the incident before arriving at the match and was told the decision not to award a spot-kick was correct because Milla had not moved his arm towards the ball.

“Before coming here, I asked whether it was a penalty or not. It’s not me saying it, but I was told it wasn’t, because Luis doesn’t move his arm and is trying to keep it out of the way,” Fabregas said.

He accepted that Como had benefited from the decision, while insisting their own penalty was more straightforward.

“It looked like a penalty to me, we were lucky, but people who understand it better than me, professionals, said it wasn’t. Ours? That was clearer,” he added.

Fabregas also explained why he felt Como’s spot-kick was justified, referring to the potential outcome had the foul not occurred.

“If the ball reaches Tasos and he isn’t touched from behind, it’s a goal. It’s difficult, and I’m saying that honestly.”
