Chelsea’s defeat by Arsenal highlights midfield problem Xabi Alonso must solve

Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat by Arsenal at Emirates Stadium exposed a major weakness in Xabi Alonso’s new-look side, with a lack of midfield depth and defensive organisation undermining the visitors’ promising start.

Chelsea arrived in north London with expectations that their £349m summer spending spree had finally turned them into serious Premier League title contenders. But while they showed enough attacking quality to trouble the reigning champions, Arsenal recovered from an early setback to claim victory.

The result was more than another defeat by Arsenal. It raised fresh questions about whether Chelsea addressed every important weakness during a summer in which they signed 11 players.

Their recruitment has added considerable attacking talent. Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro have already shown their ability to score, while the overall squad contains significant potential and ambition.

However, the match also demonstrated how exposed Chelsea could become in midfield, particularly if Moises Caicedo’s injury proves to be a prolonged problem.

Chelsea finished 10th last season, 33 points behind Arsenal. Alonso had described the current transfer window as "phase one" of the club’s rebuild, but the first major examination of his team delivered a warning that will be difficult to ignore.

Rogers gives Chelsea dream start

Chelsea shocked the home crowd after only two minutes when Morgan Rogers reacted quickest following Arsenal’s failure to clear a Reece James free-kick.

The £117m summer signing struck a volley beyond David Raya to give Chelsea an ideal start. It was also the first goal Arsenal had conceded this season.

But the early advantage did not remove concerns that had followed Chelsea into the match. Alonso’s team had failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous 18 Premier League games and soon found themselves under sustained pressure.

Emiliano Martinez denied Bukayo Saka, while Jorrel Hato and Wesley Fofana made important blocks as Arsenal searched for an equaliser.

The hosts levelled in the 25th minute through former Chelsea forward Kai Havertz. He beat Martinez at his near post with a well-placed finish, shifting the momentum firmly towards Arsenal.

Chelsea continued to carry an attacking threat. Reece James tested Raya with a long-range effort, while Pedro Neto went close to restoring the visitors’ lead after a powerful individual run ended with his shot striking the post.

Arsenal, though, retained control of the contest and eventually completed the comeback to win 2-1.

The defeat does not mean Chelsea’s summer recruitment has been a failure, but it has highlighted an imbalance in the squad. The club have invested heavily in attacking options, yet the match at Emirates Stadium suggested their midfield resources and defensive structure may not be strong enough to sustain a title challenge.

Chelsea now have goals, emerging young stars and clear ambition. But unless they can cope with Caicedo’s absence and improve their organisation without the ball, the weakness exposed against Arsenal could threaten the progress of Alonso’s rebuilding project.
