Chelsea make Barcelona defender Jules Kounde their top January target

Chelsea are preparing to strengthen their squad again in the January transfer market, with Barcelona full-back Jules Kounde reportedly identified as their number one target for the start of 2027.

The Blues are expected to follow their significant summer spending with further reinforcements, while manager Xabi Alonso is believed to be seeking at least one new defender.

Chelsea’s interest in Kounde is not new. The France international has been on the club’s radar for more than 18 months, dating back to before Alonso’s arrival at Stamford Bridge.

The former Sevilla player is reportedly frustrated at not being used regularly in his preferred centre-back position at Barcelona. Chelsea are now said to have contacted Kounde’s representatives to establish whether he would be interested in a move to Stamford Bridge.

However, any deal is likely to require a substantial fee. Kounde’s contract with Barcelona runs until 2030, meaning the Catalan club are expected to demand at least £50M before considering a sale.

Chelsea’s reported pursuit comes amid longer-term injury concerns surrounding captain Reece James, which have increased the need for defensive reinforcements.

Barcelona also allowed Ronald Araujo to leave at the beginning of the 2026/27 campaign. Liverpool are considering making his move to Anfield permanent after a strong start to his loan spell.

Kounde can operate at both full-back and centre-back, but his reported preference for the central defensive role is understood to be an important factor in his current situation at Barcelona. Chelsea have maintained their interest despite the change in management since first monitoring him.

The Premier League club will now have to determine whether Barcelona are willing to negotiate and whether Kounde would consider a move, with the defender tied to the Spanish side for a further four years beyond the proposed January transfer window.
