Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Bradley Barcola will face a difficult challenge to secure regular playing time after making his first appearance for the club.
Barcola recently played for Liverpool for the first time since completing his move from PSG. The forward began the match against Ipswich on the substitutes’ bench before being introduced in the 64th minute, replacing Victor Munoz.
Carragher’s assessment focuses on the competition for places within a Liverpool attack that has already seen Cody Gakpo make a significant contribution. Gakpo started the match against Ipswich and registered two assists for Alexander Isak in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory.
The Netherlands international had also influenced Liverpool’s previous matches. He scored against Newcastle and provided an assist in the fixture against Nottingham Forest, further strengthening his claim for a starting position.
That recent form helps explain why Carragher believes opportunities may be limited for Barcola, despite the size of the fee Liverpool have paid to bring him to the club. The transfer cost €125m, excluding bonuses, making Barcola one of the most expensive signings in Liverpool’s history.
Barcola’s first outing therefore came in a supporting role rather than from the start. His appearance against Ipswich lasted from the 64th minute onwards, giving him an initial opportunity to experience Liverpool football while competing with established attacking options for a place in the starting side.
Carragher’s comments do not change the significance of the transfer, but they underline the immediate challenge facing the new arrival. A substantial transfer fee does not guarantee a starting position, particularly when another forward is producing goals and assists.
Gakpo’s two assists for Isak were the decisive attacking contribution in the 2-0 result against Ipswich. His earlier goal against Newcastle and assist against Nottingham Forest have also added to the pressure on other forwards seeking regular involvement.
For Barcola, the next step will be to turn substitute appearances into more substantial opportunities. His Liverpool debut has now taken place, but Carragher expects the newcomer to find it difficult to establish himself quickly in a team where competition for attacking places is already intense.
The former Liverpool defender’s view comes at the start of Barcola’s career with the club. The French forward has made his first appearance, while Liverpool have already seen Gakpo deliver a sequence of important contributions and Isak score twice against Ipswich.
With the transfer fee reaching €125m before bonuses, attention will remain on how Liverpool manage Barcola’s involvement. For now, though, Carragher’s message is that consistent playing time is unlikely to come easily.
