Bayern Munich are considering a January bid for Liverpool forward Florian Wirtz, who has endured a difficult 18 months since moving to Anfield.
The Germany international joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen last summer for a reported £116m, but has so far struggled to justify the fee.
Wirtz, 23, has scored only seven goals in 54 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool and is increasingly lacking confidence.
German sources say Bayern Munich are monitoring his situation closely and could try to bring him back to Germany if Liverpool are willing to consider a deal.
Liverpool are expected to receive offers for Wirtz, although there is currently no indication they are prepared to sell him during the January transfer window.
Andoni Iraola has defended Wirtz against recent criticism and appears ready to continue relying on the number 17 for now.
“I am not too focused about numbers,” Iraola said.
“Nowadays everything is about numbers, everyone tells players you have to assist, score goals. For me, you have to help us play well.”
Iraola’s stance is expected to be shared by Liverpool, with the club not prepared to listen to bids for Wirtz until at least the summer.
