Balerdi’s late double earns Roma dramatic draw at Napoli

AS Roma preserved their unbeaten Serie A start with a remarkable 3-3 draw against Napoli, recovering from behind twice at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Roma, who now have five wins and three draws this season, were forced to fight back after Napoli established a two-goal lead and later moved in front again through Scott McTominay.

The opening half was played at a high tempo, with chances at both ends. Bryan Cristante sent an effort narrowly wide from the edge of the area before Donyell Malen drew a save from Alex Meret.

Napoli then broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion. Matteo Politano’s free-kick was headed away by Marten de Roon, but the ball dropped for Frank Anguissa, whose overhead kick flew into the corner. It was the first league goal Roma had conceded before half-time this season.

Roma nearly responded immediately when Mario Hermoso curled a shot just past the post, while Cristante later flicked a header against the crossbar.

Napoli continued to create opportunities, and Pierluigi Gollini produced an excellent close-range save to deny Mathias Olivera as the hosts finished the half strongly.

They extended their advantage only three minutes after the restart. Politano delivered towards the far post, where McTominay met the cross with a powerful header that Gollini could not keep out.

The Scotland international, who had scored twice in midweek, then came close to adding another when Gollini denied him in a one-on-one situation. The former Napoli goalkeeper also kept out Politano as the home side looked to build on their advantage.

Roma, however, began a stunning fightback against the run of play. Soule exchanged passes with Malen before curling a precise finish into the bottom corner to reduce the deficit.

The visitors completed their recovery only a few minutes later. Following a corner, Santiago Castro brought the ball down with his chest and Leonardo Balerdi struck a powerful finish beyond Meret to make it 2-2.

Napoli regained the lead when McTominay scored again. Leonardo Spinazzola’s initial effort was parried by Gollini, but the rebound fell to McTominay, who fired an unstoppable long-range shot into the net to claim his fourth goal of the week.

Roma still had time to produce another equaliser. Just before stoppage time, Wesley Franca sent a cross into the area and Balerdi rose to head home, completing his brace after coming off the bench.

Napoli manager Max Allegri was sent off for protesting the equalising goal. The result ended Napoli’s four-game winning run at home, while Allegri’s side will regret failing to close out a match in which they led twice.

Gian Piero Gasperini will be encouraged by Roma’s response as his side continued their title challenge with a point.

Flashscore’s Man of the Match was Roma’s Leonardo Balerdi.
