Azzedine Ounahi faces up to three months out with hamstring injury

Morocco are expected to be without Azzedine Ounahi for their two Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers against Niger in November after the midfielder suffered a serious hamstring injury.

Ounahi was taken off on a stretcher during Panathinaikos’ Greek league match on Sunday and underwent further examinations on Monday. An MRI scan showed a third-degree tear to the biceps femoris in his right leg, according to Le360 Sport.

Sources close to Panathinaikos have indicated that the 26-year-old could be sidelined for between two and a half and three months. However, the club had not issued an official statement on the injury at the time of writing.

Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi is therefore likely to be without one of his established players for the next international break. Morocco are due to face Niger in Casablanca on 13 November before meeting them again in Rabat on 17 November, in the third and fourth rounds of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.

The injury is Ounahi’s 10th since November 2022, continuing a difficult period in which he has repeatedly been affected by fitness problems.

The former Marseille player was also restricted by a calf injury last season. That issue kept him out in October 2025 and again from January to February.

Ounahi had been a guaranteed starter during Morocco’s most recent international gathering. He provided the assist in the 2-0 victory over Lesotho on 29 September, in the second round of the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers.

The midfielder has made 58 appearances for Morocco and scored 12 goals.
