South African giants Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly renewed their interest in Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping department ahead of the new season, Nigeriasoccernet.com understands.

The Soweto-based club had closely monitored Nwabali during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he delivered standout performances for the Nigeria national football team, helping the side secure a bronze medal finish.

Following his departure from Chippa United earlier this year, the 29-year-old has remained without a club. However, that situation could soon change, with reports indicating that Chiefs have now tabled an offer to secure his services on a permanent deal.

Widely respected for his commanding presence, sharp reflexes, and composure under pressure, Nwabali’s availability as a free agent makes him an attractive option in the transfer market. His experience and leadership qualities are seen as key attributes that could bring much-needed stability to a defensive unit eager to return to the summit of South African football.

The renewed pursuit comes amid uncertainty surrounding current first-choice goalkeeper Brandon Petersen. Petersen is expected to be discharged from hospital on Monday after undergoing an appendix operation on Friday, a procedure that ruled him out of the recent Soweto derby. Although his recovery is progressing well, the timeline for his return remains unclear, with appendectomy rehabilitation typically lasting between three and six weeks.

The goalkeeper reportedly fell ill earlier in the week before doctors advised immediate surgery, a setback not only for Chiefs but also for his hopes of earning a recall to the South Africa national soccer team for upcoming friendlies.

In Petersen’s absence, Bruce Bvuma deputised in the derby against Orlando Pirates, a contest Chiefs lost 3–0. The defeat leaves Amakhosi 11 points behind in the Betway Premiership title race as they continue their rebuilding process.
