FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup: Spain overcome Nigeria to make winning start in Poland

Published on: 07 September 2026

Nigeria’s Falconets began their 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup campaign with a 2-0 defeat by former champions Spain at Arena Sosnowiec on Monday evening.

Spain, who won the tournament in 2022, made the stronger start and went ahead after 13 minutes. Marisa Garcia finished past Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma to give the European side an early advantage.

The Falconets responded positively to falling behind and created a number of promising openings as they tried to restore parity. However, Moses Aduku’s team could not find the equaliser before half-time, with Spain taking a narrow lead into the interval.

Nigeria returned from the break with greater energy and enjoyed periods of control. The Falconets moved the ball forward with more purpose, while their attempts to break through the Spanish defence produced several opportunities.

Spain’s goalkeeper Lopez played a key part in preserving her team’s advantage. She dealt with Nigeria’s efforts and ensured the 2022 champions remained in front as the Falconets continued to search for a way back into the contest.

The pressure from Nigeria left spaces for Spain to exploit, and the European side extended their lead on the counter-attack in the 72nd minute. Alba Cerrato beat Uzoma to make it 2-0 and put Spain in a commanding position.

Nigeria continued to work hard in the closing stages, but the Falconets were unable to register a goal. Their performance contained flashes of quality and determination, although they lacked the decisive final touch needed against a well-organised Spanish defence.

The defeat leaves Nigeria with work to do in Group F after their opening match. The Falconets will now prepare for their second group fixture against China PR on Thursday, September 10.

That match will give Aduku’s side the opportunity to respond to the opening-day loss and revive their hopes of progressing from the group at the global tournament. Spain, meanwhile, have made the ideal start to their campaign as they seek to build on their status as former FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup champions.

Nigeria’s opening result was ultimately decided by Spain’s efficiency at both ends of the pitch. Garcia took advantage of an early opportunity, while Cerrato struck when the Falconets committed players forward in search of an equaliser.

Although Nigeria were unable to score, their improved display after half-time showed their willingness to challenge Spain and fight their way back into the match. The team’s next assignment against China PR will now be central to their efforts to get their campaign back on track in Poland.
