Son of Nigeria's famous sports administrator, Dr. Amos Adamu, was on Sunday, March 29, appointed as the Acting Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

According to the statement released yesterday by the Director of Communications of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Dr Ademola Olajire, Samson is the first Nigerian to be appointed to the position since the continent's football-governing body was founded 70 years ago.

Samson Adamu replaced Swiss-Congolese Veron Mosengo-Omba, who tendered his resignation the same day.

Before his latest appointment, Adamu was the CAF's Director of Tournaments and Events, and played key roles in the successful organisation of major continental competitions.

His name was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and ratified by the Congress, at its meeting of Sunday, 29th March 2026 at the Giza Palace Hotel in Cairo, Egypt.

It will be recalled that Samson's father, Dr Adamu once served as an Executive Committee member of FIFA and the Confederation of African Football, and also served as Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

In December 2000, Adamu was named President for the Organising Committee for the 8th All-Africa Games (COJA).

Nigeria won the Games held in October 2023 in the newly constructed Abuja National Stadium now renamed as MKO Abiola Stadium Abuja.

The Confederation of African Football has appointed officials from the Kingdom of Morocco to take charge of the second leg match, set for Stade Lat Dior in Thies, Senegal's third largest city, which is 70 kilometres from the capital, Dakar.

Zakia El Grini will be the referee, to be assisted by Karima Khadiri (AR1) and Ihsane Ennouajeli Nouajli (AR2), with Zoulaikha Harmasse as fourth official. Oumou Souleymane Kane from Mauritania will be the commissioner while Kenyan Alice Kimani will be in the role of referee assessor.

The match has been slated to kick off at 5pm Senegal time (6pm Nigeria time), with the winner on aggregate to progress to the final round of the African qualifiers. The final tournament will take place in Poland in September.

Wikki Tourists have been hit with a sweeping list of sanctions by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after serious breaches of the league's Framework and Rules during their league fixture against Katsina United last Sunday.

In what the NPFL described as multiple security and conduct failures, the Bauchi-based club was found guilty of failing to provide adequate and effective security, a lapse that allowed unauthorised persons access to restricted areas within the stadium; a clear violation of league regulations designed to protect players, officials, and match integrity.

According to the charge sheet, the situation deteriorated further during the match, as Wikki supporters engaged in unsporting behaviour that could bring the game into disrepute. This included the throwing of dangerous objects, notably stones, onto the pitch, endangering Katsina United players and match officials.

The NPFL also confirmed that Wikki failed to properly control their supporters, leading to harassment, loss of personal items, and injuries sustained by match officials and an official of the away team.

As a result, the league has imposed a series of financial and sporting sanctions:

?2 million fine for failing to provide adequate and effective security

?1.5 million fine covering compensatory and medical costs, broken down as: ?250,000 for the referee's lost whistle, ?250,000 for medical expenses for the referee, ?500,000 each for medical treatment of an injured medical personnel and a Katsina United official, ?1 million fine for unsporting behaviour capable of bringing the game into disrepute, ?1 million fine for throwing dangerous objects onto the pitch and ?2 million fine for holding match officials and the away team hostage for several hours after the match, as well as causing an 18-minute delay before the match was restarted.

Beyond the fines, the NPFL has taken a firm stance on the matter. Wikki Tourists will no longer play home matches in Bauchi, with all future home fixtures relocated indefinitely to the Jos Stadium.

The club has been given 48 hours from the date of notification to formally appeal the sanctions.

The ruling sends a strong message from the NPFL hierarchy as the league continues its push to enforce security, professionalism, and matchday discipline, amid growing concerns over fan behaviour and safety in Nigerian football.

Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze is mourning the death of his mother, Mrs Sarah Chukwueze, following a brief illness.

While the AC Milan winger did not make a public announcement, the sad news was first shared by his brother, David Chukwueze, who posted a series of emotional tributes on Instagram reflecting the family’s grief.

In one post, David wrote, “Can’t even post your picture to say RIP mum.” In another, he added, “My forever love just left me without saying goodbye,” while also saying, “You didn’t even carry your grandchild.”

The development was later officially confirmed by the National Sports Commission in a statement issued on Thursday. The Commission disclosed that Mrs Chukwueze passed away after a brief illness, noting that the announcement had already been made public by members of the family.

Super Eagles attacker Lookman head coach Raffaele Palladino has revealed his fitness status ahead of his side's UCL group game against Union Saint-Gilloise, 

Lookman played six games for Nigeria at the AFCON 2025 tournament, helping Eric Chelle's men to a bronze medal.

However, he's been limited to just minutes off the bench since he returned to Bergamo. He grabbed an assist in 25 minutes against Athletic Club last week.

Over the weekend, he came off the bench to play 11 minutes in Atalanta's 4-0 win over Parma in the Serie A.

Obviously, when you return after 40 days in a different context and another competition, you need a moment to get back into the rhythms and patterns you left behind weeks earlier.

“But the boy has the right mentality to make himself available immediately. Starter? We'll see. Maybe, maybe not. Like him, everyone is available,” Palladino said about Lookman.

Given that Union Saint-Gilloise are a Belgian club, Palladino is hoping the game at the Lotto Park will be of extra motivation to Belgium-born Atalanta forward Charles De Ketelaere.

He is a complete player: he does a phase of possession and not fantastic possession, he has talent, technique and physique.

“What's missing in his game? The goals. He can and must give more from a realistic point of view, filling the area better and reasoning even more as a pure striker.

“But beyond that, he's a fantastic player,” the Atalanta coach concluded.

Scottish side Celtic coach Martin O’Neill has given a positive update on Kelechi Iheanacho, confirming that the Nigerian striker is available for selection ahead of the UEFA Europa League clash against Utrecht after being out due to injury.

Iheanacho joined Celtic in September on a free transfer after mutually parting ways with Spanish side Sevilla, following a challenging spell in which he struggled to meet expectations.

The former Leicester City striker has, however, made a strong start at his new club, scoring three goals and providing one assist in ten appearances across all competitions before suffering a hamstring injury.

Since then, Iheanacho has missed ten matches, further limiting Celtic’s attacking options during a difficult festive period.

Providing an update on his fitness, Martin O’Neill confirmed that the Nigerian international is making good progress in training and is available for selection for Celtic’s crucial clash against the Dutch side.

“Yes, he has trained and he is available for selection,” O'Neill told reporters ahead of the UEFA Europa League clash against Utrecht.

Super Eagles have climbed 12 places to be ranked 26th in the global rankings released by FIFA yesterday.

The three-time Africa champions were ranked 38th before the commencement of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco last December.

Super Eagles who were unbeaten from the group stage till losing to hosts Morocco after grueling 120 minutes in the semifinal penalty shootouts, also made a big splash in the continent, now ranked third behind winners Senegal (12th) and runners up Morocco (8th).

Algeria and Egypt, who the Super Eagles stopped at the AFCON, are the fourth and fifth top teams in Africa, respectively.

Coach Eric Chelle and his wards took the continent by surprise, coming from the ashes of not qualifying for the 2026 World Cup to becoming the team that all opponents dread to face in Morocco.

Nigeria's sharp forward of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Jerome Akor Adams tormented opponents to submission while Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka and Wilfred Ndidi held sway in the midfield. The trio played pivotal roles in Nigeria's campaign, as the Super Eagles secured third place by defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties, having earlier exited the competition at the semifinal stage after a heartbreaking 4–2 shootout defeat to hosts Morocco.

Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has explained the reasons Super Eagles players were absent from the medal ceremony at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Super Eagles clinched third place on Saturday after defeating Egypt 4-2 on penalties, but the players were not present to receive their bronze medals following Sunday's final between Morocco and Senegal.

Speaking on the issue, Gusau said the players were unable to stay back for the ceremony due to pressure from their clubs, who demanded their immediate return after the playoff match.

According to Gusau, who was quoted in a post on X on Monday by journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, the situation was not unique to Nigeria, as Egypt faced the same challenge.

"The players could not wait to receive their medals on Sunday. Their clubs were already after them to come back after Saturday's game," Gusau said.

"I have the medals in my possession. And this is the case for Egypt too, not just us. Had the medal ceremony taken place on the day of the match, they would have had the medals."

The victory handed Nigeria their 9th third-place finish, the highest in AFCON's history.

Enyimba FC produced a disciplined and clinical performance to defeat Shooting Stars Sports Club 3–0 at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) 2025 encounter, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The People’s Elephant took control of the contest with a first-half breakthrough and showed defensive resilience before sealing the 3-0 victory with two well-taken goals late in the second half.

Against the run of play, Enyimba struck again in the 84th minute through a swift counterattack. Onyebuchi Nwaorisa released Eddidong Ezekiel, who beat his marker and calmly rounded the goalkeeper to double the home side’s advantage.

Deep into stoppage time, Enyimba capped a dominant finish with a third goal. Ezekiel turned provider this time, flicking the ball into the path of Chidera Michael, who tapped into an empty net to complete a convincing victory.

Receiving the ball in space, Abubakar beat his marker and calmly chipped the goalkeeper to silence the home crowd and give Abia Warriors a crucial lead.

Plateau United threw numbers forward in the closing stages in search of an equaliser. Abia Warriors were forced into last-ditch defending, with Emmanuel Ogbuagu making a vital clearance in stoppage time.

Drama followed moments later when Plateau United’s header struck the crossbar in the 90+5th minute, coming inches away from denying the hosts an equalizer.

Abia Warriors held firm through intense late pressure to secure a valuable away win that takes them second on the log while Plateau United move further down to 19th on the log.

Ademola Lookman has praised his team's unity and teamwork after being named Man of the Match in Nigeria's 3-2 win over Tunisia at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Super Eagles coach Eric Sekou Chelle has praised his team's performance in their 3-2 win over Tunisia at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite conceding two late goals, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

One of Africa’s most storied and remarkable football rivalries makes another stop on Saturday, this time in the Moroccan city of Fès, as Nigeria and Tunisia clash in a top-of-the-table encounter of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations, at the 35,000-capacity Complexe Sportif de Fès, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

With three points taken by each team from their opening games, the stage is set for fiery exchanges as Coaches Eric Chelle and Sami Trabelsi, themselves former players, will be determined to push their teams to achieve victory and book an early spot in the tournament’s Round of 16.

There have been a total of 21 matches between both teams, dating back 64 years, with each having won six times, and the remaining nine matches drawn (though some eventually went into penalty shootouts). Of the three that stretched to penalty shootouts, Nigeria won two, including a memorable 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture and an Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final duel that flowed back and forth in the Egyptian city of Port Said 19 years ago.

Tunisia won the lottery in the 2004 AFCON that they hosted, edging the Eagles to set up a Final clash with Morocco’s Atlas Lions.

With Osimhen still looking for his first goal of the tournament, the Carthage Eagles could be under tremendous pressure from Nigeria’s ace forward who boasts 31 goals in 47 matches.

Midfield lubricator Alexander Iwobi, likely to win his 93rd cap, will be expected to play a key role in Nigeria’s challenge for the three points. Captain Wilfred Ndidi will surely be called upon several times to break up the play of the fast-paced Tunisians.

Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Coach Augustine Eguavoen was among 32 Technical Directors from FIFA Member Associations worldwide who completed the 20-month FIFA Technical Leadership Diploma programme, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The programme culminated in a convocation ceremony held a couple of weeks ago at the Home of FIFA in Zurich, Switzerland.

Notably, only two participants represented the African continent in the prestigious programme, Eguavoen and Namibia’s Jaqueline Shipanga — underlining the significance of the achievement for African football development.

Coach Eguavoen also featured in a group photograph alongside all 32 graduates at the ceremony, marking the successful completion of the elite leadership course.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is undecided on his approach for Saturday's crunch Group C match against Tunisia at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Chelle revealed he's weighing up two options: letting Tunisia dominate possession or sticking with his preferred playing philosophy.

"I have two things in mind, to give the ball to Tunisia or continue my philosophy, but I can't tell you which I will go with because Tunisia are a great team," Chelle said, highlighting the respect he has for the North Africans.

Tunisia, known for their organization and experience, present a tough test for Nigeria, who are still adjusting to Chelle's ideas.

The match is crucial for both teams, with top spot in Group C on the line.
